Spartech Receives Environmental Recognition
SPARTECH CORPORATION announced today that 35 of its plants have recently been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and WasteWise for waste reduction. During 2007, Spartech operations were successful in either preventing or recycling over 287 million pounds of waste, which represents a 54% increase over 2006 efforts.
Each year, WasteWise develops an individualized Climate Profile for every partner that reports annual data to the WasteWise program. This profile translates waste prevention and recycling figures reported on the 2007 annual assessment form into greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction information and equivalencies to help Spartech quantify its waste-related climate footprint.
In 2007, Spartech reduced Greenhouse gas emissions by 94,588 metric tons of carbon equivalent. This is equivalent to a reduction of annual greenhouse gas emissions from 63,521 passenger vehicles or over 39 million gallons of gasoline based on CO2 emissions per gallon.
Spartech's President & CEO, Myles Odaniell stated, "This recent recognition reinforces one of Spartech's core values of corporate sustainability. We are committed to continually improving our waste reduction and recycling efforts by accepting our responsibility for the future through environmentally sound business practices."
According to Alan Raymond, Director of Environmental Health & Safety for Spartech, "Our team is excited about the progress in reducing GHG emissions, future growth of our green manufacturing process and the development of green products. As evidenced by the climate profile data received from the EPA, our plants' achievements in waste prevention and pollution prevention are to be applauded."

GHG emissions are emitted at nearly every stage of a product's lifecycle, including during waste management. For more information about the connection between solid waste and GHG emissions, please refer to the Climate Change and Waste Web site at http://www.epa.gov/wastewise/climate/change.htm.
